How ultrasonic vinyl record cleaning works (and why it's worth it)
Crackle and surface noise usually come from grime deep in the groove. Here's how ultrasonic record cleaning removes it — and what to expect for your collection.
If your records crackle, pop or sound veiled, the cause is usually not damage — it’s dirt. Dust, fingerprints, old cleaning residue and mould-release from pressing sit deep in the groove where a brush or cloth simply can’t reach. Ultrasonic cleaning gets it out.
What’s actually in the groove
A record groove is a tiny V-shaped valley, and your stylus rides its walls. Even microscopic debris in that valley is picked up as noise. Wet-brush cleaners lift surface dust but leave the deepest grime behind.
The ultrasonic process
Records are rotated slowly through a filtered ultrasonic bath. High-frequency cavitation reaches the full depth of the groove and lifts contaminants that brushing can’t — dropping the noise floor and letting detail through. Each record is then gently dried and returned in a new anti-static inner sleeve.
What to expect
- Quieter surfaces and noticeably less crackle
- More clarity and detail, especially on quiet passages
- New pressings sound better too (mould-release removed)
- It won’t remove physical scratches — but many “damaged” records are just dirty
