Idle smoothed, misfire cleared

Rough-running hatchback: four petrol injectors restored

A 2013 1.4 TSI came in with a lumpy idle and a misfire code. Flow testing found two badly restricted injectors — here's what cleaning recovered.

The problem

A customer from Torrevieja brought us the four injectors from a 2013 1.4-litre petrol hatchback. The car had a lumpy idle, an intermittent misfire on cylinder 3, and fuel economy that had crept up noticeably over the year.

What the flow test showed

On the bench, three injectors flowed within a few percent of each other. The fourth — cylinder 3 — was delivering markedly less, with a visibly wandering spray pattern rather than a clean cone. A second injector was slightly down and leaking on the seat.

The clean

All four were ultrasonically cleaned with the coils pulsed, back-flushed, and fitted with new filter baskets, pintle caps, seals and o-rings. We then repeated the full flow, leak, balance and spray-pattern test.

The result

  • All four injectors flowed within tolerance of each other
  • The wandering spray pattern returned to a clean, even cone
  • The seat leak was gone

The customer reported the idle smoothed out immediately on refit and the misfire code didn’t return. Total cost was a small fraction of four replacement injectors.
